Silver plated copper alloy button with the corporate seal of Penryn, represented by the head of the Saracen, draped and wearing a wreath within a square shield, surrounded by the legend: PENRYN ~ BVRGVS ~ (divided by scrolls). Penryn was a borough from 1236, when it was enfranchised by the Bishop of Exeter, until 1918, when the term was abolished and it became a constituency. The symbol of the Saracen's head may come from the time of the Crusades and may have been reinforced by more raids on Cornwall by Islamic pirates during the 17th and 18th centuries. On the reverse of the button, there is a soldered central loop surrounded by the backmark: C & J WELDON, LONDON, a company who produced such buttons from c.1880-1910.
