Battle scene. Futuhat-i Shahi "Isma'il fights the Shirvanshah. (Amini, Futuhat-i Shahi, ms. Dorn 301, f. 45v, with permission of the National Library of Russia, St Petersburg.)" The illustration of history in Safavid manuscript painting", By Charles P Melville "The paintings form a neat little illustrative program highlighting separate facets of Isma‘il’s kingship. Thus we see him enthroned and receiving a petition, as well as on horseback receiving the heads of prisoners. Isma‘il is also shown in other kingly pursuits, such as displaying his prowess in battle and skill at the archery-game of qabaq. Events more specific to the life of Isma‘il are also included, such as the time when the adolescent Shah killed a cave-dwelling bear, as well as the episode in which Isma‘il, idly contemplating the walls of a fortress he was besieging, spotted an old man atop the structure signaling to him for mercy—which, coincidentally enough, happened to fulfill a dream Isma‘il had recently had presaging exactly such a signal." in The Tarikh-i Jahanara in the Chester Beatty Library: An Illustrated Manuscript of the “Anonymous Histories of Shah Isma'il”, Iranian Studies , Volume 37 , Issue 1 , March 2
