A cast copper alloy hinged lid of probable Roman date, about AD 43 - 410, cast in the shape of a scallop shell, probably from a lamp. The lid is thick and robust. The convex top is moulded with radiating ribs. The straight back edge has a projecting integral loop with is slightly off centre. This is part of the hinge mechanism. The reverse is concave and a little rough from pitting and corrosion, but it appears never to have been finely finished. There is a chip in one edge. The metal has a dark green patina. The object is 42.6mm long, 34.2mm wide and 15.2mm thick. 39.58g. Compare British Museum Collection Online number 98937, a Byzantine lamp from Iraq. The British Museum example is flatter than the one recorded here.
