Late Saxon Disc weight consisting of a lead core in a cast openwork copper alloy sheath. The curvilinear foliar motifs on both faces are very similar. The convex edges is undecorated. Parts of the lead core are missing. Diameter 38mm, thickness 13mm. The current weight is 1533.8 grains / 3.1955oz Troy.Similar objects found in Winchester and weighing 3304 and 3124 grains were considered to be probably of the 11th cent. and to be for half a mercantile pound of 15oz Troy (Biddle 1990, 910-15 and 918, fig.280 nos.3192 and 3195). This piece may therefore have been originally intended to weigh a quarter of a mercantile pound (3.75oz Troy), natural decay and recent loss of parts of the core accounting for the shortfall.
