MEDIEVAL WEIGHT

A lead alloy weight of unknown date. The weight is circular and discoidal with a diameter of 29.6mm and is 6.3mm thick. It weighs 34.41g or 1.21oz. This is close to a Troy ounce which was used for measuring coins and precious metals. However, the weight could also be an idiosyncratic one produced for local use. There appears to be a slight rim on both faces which has been chipped and scratched. One face has a larger concaved dip than the other making the rim more prominent. The other face has a large scratch in the rim which is unpatinated suggesting that it is more recent than the rest of the damage to the weight. A similar example is WILT-DA6BE3 on the database. A medieval or post medieval date is the most likely.
