A complete circular lead trade weight of Post-Medieval date.It is flat with moulded decoration on the front face. This consists of either a heraldic shield or a Bishops mitre. If a heraldic shield it is decorated with two chevrons. In the two triangular corners created by the upper chevron is a circular pellet. In the lozenge shape created by the lower chevron is a moulded cross. This may be imitating the arms of the St Clare family of Suffolk. If a Bishops mitre the decoration is reversed. This weight measures 65.97mm in diameter, 10.27mm in thickness, 328g in weight. This trade weight is approximately twelve ounces which is three quarters of a pound on the averdepois weight standard and suggests a date range from the 15th to 18th centuries AD when the weight system was standardised. In 1558 there was an issue of standards for both the averdepois and troy systems.
