A lead alloy probable bar weight. The weight is 86.6mm long, 47.8mm wide and 25.6mm high. It is rectangular with sloping sides, the top being smaller than the bottom. The top is stamped with lettering on two lines. The top line is illegible but the bottom line reads: “LEEDS”. There is a deep circular depression at the left hand end of the top which may be an authentication stamp, but is now illegible. It weighs 756g which is equivalent to 26.6oz. It is possible that the weight fits into the Troy weight system for measuring precious metals or coins, as it is almost exactly 2 Troy pounds. The weight is dark grey with areas of light grey corrosion products. It is scratched and dented, but otherwise in good condition. Lead weights are notoriously difficult to date, and it is frustrating that the first line of writing on this one, which might have provided a clue to the date, is illegible, however, it is likely to be post-medieval.
