POST MEDIEVAL WEIGHT

A corroded cast lead weight, probably a pan weight of post-medieval date. The weight is circular in plan with some bevelling and abrasions from the smaller upper surface to the larger lower. It is decorated on its upper face with a cross in relief dividing the surface into quarters. Incised finely on the flat lower surface is a pair of keys in saltire (cross keys). This device is found on a number of artefacts recorded on this database, all of post-medieval date; the keys are of this style. Through the keys is a vertical incision, with traces of a transverse incision and possible border towards the circumference. At 112g it is equivalent to around 3.6 troy ounces, or around 4 ounces avoirdupois (a quarter of a pound). This artefact has corroded to an off-white colour.
